Regular Investing little and often can be a great way to build up your savings

How does regular investing work?

Many people think that you need to have large pots of money to become an investor. In fact you can get started with a regular contribution of just £50 a month. If you ‘drip feed’ a smaller amount of money into the stock market, it also removes the risk that you’ll invest all your savings on the worst day of the year. By investing little and often, your investment should average out the highs and the lows of the stock market throughout year.

Start with as little as £50 per month

If you can afford to invest just under £2 a day – that’s £50 a month – you can set up a direct debit from your bank account which will automatically top up your investment account or Stocks and Shares ISA on the 25th of every month.

  • Available within our Investment Account and Shareview Dealing ISA.
  • Choose from a wide range of investments including shares, investment trusts, Open Ended Investment Companies and Exchange Traded Funds.
  • You decide how much money to invest each month. Start from only £50 per investment per month.
  • Your investment is made on the 4th day of every month (or the next working day if this falls on a weekend or public holiday) so once you’ve set up the Regular Investment you don’t need to do anything else.

The power of regular investing

The stock market isn’t always a smooth ride but investing regularly each month allows you to build up your investments and can help to smooth out fluctuations in share prices over time.

For example, let’s say you have £1,200 to invest. We’ll compare buying £1,200 worth of ABC company shares in January against investing £100 per month over the whole year:

Date ABC Company share price Number of shares purchased (Bulk) Number of shares purchased (regular investment)
Jan - Mar 200p 600 150
Apr - Jun 225p   132
Jul - Sep 200p   150
Oct - Dec 150p   198
Total 600 630

As you can see in this example, although there are share price fluctuations, investing regularly has helped to smooth them out because you buy more shares when the price is low and fewer when the price is high. Please note that this is only an example and the share price may not always work to your advantage.
