Definitions
Notification of Death - A communication advising us of the death of a holder. This can be accompanied by a death certificate or interim death certificate.
Registration of Death – A Restriction placed on the accounts upon receipt of Grant of Representation or completed Small Estates Form.
Restrictions - A restriction informs the operator of any special instructions which may prevent the operator from continuing with the transaction without investigation.
Death Certificate – Document issued by the General Registry Office formally registering the death.
Grant of Representation – Legal document entitling a representative to deal with the estate of a deceased shareholder. A Grant of Representation includes the following: Letters of Administration, Grant of Probate or Scottish Confirmation.
Small Estates – A procedure that can be used by the next of kin only to register the death of a shareholder when no Grant of Representation has been issued and the value of their estate is less than an agreed amount of money. This is not a legal process, it is simply a concession allowed by Equiniti to settle estates without recourse to a Grant of Representation.
Executor - A person(s) appointed in a deceased will to manage the deceased holders' estate.
Administrator - A person(s) appointed by the court to manage the deceased holders' estate when no will has been left.
Will – A legal document that makes sure your estate is passed on to family and friends exactly as you wish.
Retained Dividends – Dividends due to the holder (or their legal representative) that have been withheld due to a restriction being placed upon the account e.g. Gone away or Deceased.
Power of Attorney - A legal document signed and witnessed authorising a person to act in respect of another person's affairs.
Sealed Office Copies – Duplicate documents Issued by the Probate Office.
De Bonis Non - Legal document required when the legal representative named as the sole administrator in the Grant of Representation has died.
