Register a Power of Attorney

Depending on when the Power of Attorney was granted please provide us with an LPA access code or Power of Attorney document (or certified copy). We will then update the share register with the details of the shareholder (donor) who has given this status of Attorney. The Attorney will then be able to administer the shares in line with the terms detailed in the Power of Attorney document.

In order to update our records, we will need to see either:

For Power of Attorneys granted on or after 01 January 2016

An LPA access code to update the register. An access code has 13 characters and starts with "V" and is valid for 50 days. Further information on this can be found on Use a lasting power of attorney - GOV.UK

If you are unable to obtain an access code, please send us a letter explaining why and enclose the original or certified Power of Attorney.

For Power of Attorneys granted before 01 January 2016 we will need to see either:

• The original Power of Attorney or
• A certified copy of the Power of Attorney document

If you wish to provide a certified copy, we will require the original signature of the solicitor, stockbroker or donor (the current shareholder who is giving Power of Attorney) on every page.

Please also give full details of:

• The current shareholder including: full name, address;
• The name(s) of the company(ies) in which the shares are held;
• The Shareholder Reference(s) of the shareholding(s) (this/these can be found at the top of any correspondence from us).

For Power of Attorneys obtained outside of the UK

To register the Power of Attorney we require all of the following:

• It to be in English, with details of the name and address of the donor, the names and addresses of all attorneys' and the powers the attorneys' have been given.
• The donor and attorneys' to have signed the Power of Attorney and their signatures to have been witnessed.
• A notary public to have attested or certified the signature of the donor. The attestation or certification must have an original signature.
• The notary's public seal or stamp, placed on the Power of Attorney.

If an attorney has died, you should inform the Office of the Public Guardian, and they will annotate your Power of Attorney document accordingly. We will alternatively accept the Power of Attorney documentation alongside a copy of the late attorney's death certificate.
